<image:title>Private Classes</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a great option if you would prefer to practise 1:1 but would like a teacher there to help guide you. Classes are totally personalised according to your needs and are structured to be an affordable alternative to a group class. Individuals, couples or small groups are welcome. This would be especially suitable for you if regular group classes are not what you need right now, be it due to health or a private event. Classes can be in person at your home/another venue/online. Please get in touch to discuss. *Gledhow Mount and Insight Health Centre in Chapel Allerton (Leeds) are both excellent venues if you would like to have a private class outside of your home.</image:caption>

<image:title>My Yoga Journey</image:title>
<image:caption>Welcome! My name is Maryam (she/her) and I am a Canadian-British Yoga teacher of Indian heritage. I am also a mum to small children and prior to teaching Yoga, have spent most of my work life as a French School teacher both in Canada and England. When the Covid Pandemic hit, I became furloughed and decided that it was the right time to follow my dreams and meld my teaching skill set with my lifelong passion for Yoga. As an Indian Muslim, I have been raised with the principles of Yoga and Ayurveda all my life. I turned to Yoga Asana (movement) classes in my late teens and fell in love with the mental clarity and emotional calmness that this beautiful practise provides. Although the focus of my personal practise has changed over the years from physical to more philosophical, Yoga will always be a part of my life, be it as a 5-minute meditation or an hour of much needed me-time.</image:caption>

<image:title>My Teaching Philosophy</image:title>
<image:caption>My group classes focus on both the holistic and physical aspects of yoga. I love incorporating music, mantras and chanting into my classes, as Yoga is so much more than just ‘a good stretch’. I also love to integrate trauma-informed techniques to help regulate and calm the nervous system. My main goal in each class is for you to come out feeling more balanced and centred both mentally and physically. I also have a keen interest in helping people for whom regular classes pose a barrier, be it due to health, emotional or social reasons. I do this both privately and at the Community level by working with fantastic organisations like Umbrella Yoga CIC in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, where I deliver sessions to at-risk communities and those with additional needs. I also have considerable experience working with clients suffering from Long Covid, Cancer or Chronic Health Conditions such as Fibromyalgia and M.E. Private classes are generally held at the students’ home or online. Please get in touch if I can be of any help. I firmly believe that Yoga is for each and every soul, no matter how you look or how flexible you are. I work with my students to help them understand their own body’s needs, using props and modifications whenever needed. Lastly, I strongly believe in working to create a fully inclusive and diverse yoga community and I continually engage in discussions and workshops that endeavour to improve South Asian representation of Yoga in the West.</image:caption>

<image:title>My Path to Trauma-Informed Yoga</image:title>
<image:caption>I began to feel especially drawn to trauma work during my Yoga Teacher Training. I particularly resonated with Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk’s groundbreaking book The Body Keeps the Score, which surmises that our response to a traumatic event is not only emotional but also physiological. This means that trauma can affect our brain on a neurological level as well as how our body functions. During this time, I was also on my own healing journey, and did a lot of research on different coping mechanisms. Although talking therapy was definitely the most helpful to process my thoughts and emotions, Yoga enabled me to access memories and layers to myself that I did not have the words to express. The combination of both these healing modalities helped me so profoundly that it changed the trajectory of my Yoga career. I realised that anyone who is going through something traumatic, whether it’s a disease, loss or divorce, could use Yoga to help regulate their emotions and heal from their trauma. Once I finished my initial Yoga Teacher Training, I decided to delve further into the therapeutic aspects of Yoga. I deeply resonated with Dr. Gabor Maté’s as well as Dr. Porges’ work & their approach to treating trauma. I decided to complete a further training in Trauma-Informed Yoga with Susi Wrenshaw at Trauma Therapy Manchester, who has herself received training from Dr. Maté, Dr. Porges and Dr. Van Der Kolk, among other esteemed individuals. I now offer Trauma-Informed Yoga Sessions for individuals and small groups both in person and online. If you are curious about whether Trauma-Informed Yoga can help you, I welcome you to learn more by clicking below or by booking a free 30 minute chat.</image:caption>
